This is caused by join_geometries initializing attributes to 0.

Overlay Next: GPencil selection mode overlay from edit mode visible in sculpt mode

Hm yea this is not a bug for the reason @PratikPB2123 described. The current design uses separate selection modes for the different object modes. This would need to be written as a design proposal.
