My bad! Seems like the issue was caused by trying to insert a keyframe outside of the boundaries of the NLA Strip end-start

Cannot repro in a simple test here.

Mind sharing the file where it fails?

Sorry, to clarify, it doesn't insert negative frames for bones, it does for objects.
