It sure is.
Auto-smooth is replaced by the new modifier. But shade smooth with sharp already behave like smooth by angle with 180 degree. There is no visual change…
What about getting rid of the star icon, and instead use Alt+click on the eye icon for soloing?

@Jeroen-Bakker Looks fine in 4.1 stable. I found something else in 4.2 d7c718dfd467. The subdivision modifier brings back aliased edge.
Same result on two of my display, Dell U2410 and Cintiq 13 HD. Both are on their native resolution, 1920x1200 and 1920x1080. No scaling applied on OS level.
