System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19044-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 528.49

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.5.0, branch: blender-v3.5-release, commit date: 2023-03-29 02:56, hash: 1be25cfff18b
Worked: Never?

Short description of error
Front view key binding should give us +Y view, now it gives us -Y view. The negative Y axis is now key binded for the front view instead of the back view.

From #120441:

Front view is not actually Front view but "Looking forwards view"
Back view is not actually Back view but is "Looking backwards view"

To maintain consistency and stick to the convention Front and Back views should be swapped so that;

When Front view is selected the viewport switches to "looking backwards" which displays the Front side on the object (Y+)
When Back view is selected the viewport switches to "looking forwards" which displays the Back side of the object (Y-)

There are many threads on the internet from many users who are baffled by the viewport views and this discontinuity is the reason.
It's a mix and match of conventions.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Press numpad 1, viewport switched to -Y view. (Should be +Y)
  • Press cntrl + numpad 1, viewport switched to +Y view. (Should be -Y)

I'm not sure if this behaviour is intended as I'm not using it frequently. Tested from 3.6 back to 2.93, the behaviour is consistent. Could you give us more information as in when did it break?

The current behaviour of the key binding:

np1: -Y (is this reversed?)
np3: X
np7: Z

User interface guys should take a look at this.

I've noticed it was also in version 3.4.1. Before that the np1 was set to Y instead of -Y. Now it's reversed.

@Iwan-El-Sayed Interesting. Maybe it's due to the user preference, all versions on my computer shows np1 as -Y. I guess then there's indeed a reversal somewhere...

I'm probably thinking about this wrong, but this is our factory orientation:

I would consider the "front" orientation to be "X". We have right and left along the Y axis, but the side most dominant is -Y.

When I test back to 2.83 I see the same behavior of np1 showing -Y. The only difference is that it was hard to tell it was -Y back then because it only showed a different ring around the green ball. In 2.93 and newer the gizmo shows "-Y" for np1.

So not seeing anything that backs up the assertion that "Front view key binding should give us +Y view". What am I missing?

Yeah I had consistent behaviour on previous versions before, so I'm not sure if this is really a bug or if it's intentional

The (Front/Right/Top) are the Audience's/Camera's view.

Think of Suzanne on a Thrust Stage, and you are in the audience.

Viewing Suzanne from the front, the negative Y axis points toward you.

Move to the seats that are House Right, you view Suzanne's left side from the right, and the positive X axis points towards you.

Continuing to circle around by jumping on the stage, you view Suzanne from the back, and the positive Y axis points toward you.

Does that help to clarify?
