Crash: repeatedly selecting Cycles while Optix Denoiser is enabled #114123

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19045-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.6.0 NVIDIA 545.84

Blender Version
Broken: version: 4.1.0 Alpha, branch: main, commit date: 2023-10-23 22:43, hash: 515d25fbedff

Short description of error
Repeatedly and quickly selecting Cycles while having Optix Denoiser on, crashes Blender and/or breaks the Optix denoiser.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
-> Rendered View & enable Cycles with Optix Denoiser
-> quickly and repeatedly select cycles again from the dropdown menu
seems to only crash when done very quickly

often the Optix DN breaks after 2-4 times selecting Cycles again. (after which it can still crash)

sometimes crashes after 3 tries, other times it doesn't crash after a lot more tries
if it doesn't happen, restarting blender seems to make it more likely again

Render Device CPU/GPU doesn't matter

edit: could be related to this report: #114125

Hi, unable to confirm either in 4.1

**System Information**
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.22000-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Laptop GPU/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.6.0 NVIDIA 532.03

@Blended-Toast , can you share crash logs?:

Please open Blender's installation directory and double click on the blender_debug_gpu.cmd. This will start Blender in debug mode and create log files. Try to reproduce the
error again. Once it crashes or you close Blender manually the Windows Explorer should open and show you up to two files, a debug log and the system information. Add them
to your bug report by clicking on the upload button as shown in the screenshot below or via drag and drop. Please also upload the crash log located in C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Local\Temp\[project name].crash.txt (or simply type %TEMP% into the path bar of the Windows Explorer).2019_12_04_upload_icon_developer_blender_org.png

Exception module is nvcuda64.dll which is part of NVIDIA/CUDA drivers.
Could it be due to recent GPU drivers 4.6.0 NVIDIA 546.01?
Have you tried clean installation of drivers?

Also, do we require specific file to trigger the crash?

Unable to confirm the crash with newer NVIDIA drivers. But we also have similar crash report: #114548

After doing a clean driver install it unfortunately still crashes.
No, you don't need a specific file, it happens in the startup file.

Crash logs after clean install:

Still unable to redo this crash but crash logs/faulting module suggests this is related to #114548

I was experiencing the crashes after updating from Blender 3.6 to 4 (both on Ubuntu and Windows 11). After the update I chose to import settings from blender 3.6. As suggested here I reset the settings (Edit > Preferences > burger menu in bottom left corner > Load factory preferences ) and after this the crashing stopped.

Before resetting the settings i also tried updating and downgrading both the graphics card driver and Blender but the crash was still happening, also in Blender 3.6.

I have GeForce RTX 3070 Mobile graphics card.

Guess this has been fixed in newer driver-version release: 546.33
@Blended-Toast , can you check?

@PratikPB2123 Yes it seems to be fixed (for me at least). Both the Denoiser breaking and the crash.
Just tried it a bunch of times with the newest 4.1.0 Alpha on the 546.33 driver.
