Optix Cycles viewport denoising suddenly stops working #114781

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.22621-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.6.0 NVIDIA 546.01

Blender Version
Broken: version: 4.0.0 Release Candidate, branch: blender-v4.0-release, commit date: 2023-11-10 13:29, hash: c688b038473a
Worked: 3.6

Short description of error
When using Blender 4.0 RC with viewport denoising enabled (Optix backend), sometimes the denoising stops working. A restart of Blender is required to make viewport denoising work again.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • open a Blender scene
  • operate normally
  • switch back and forth from Solid to Rendered view
  • eventually, denoising stops working on my end

It happens on every file and I can't find a specific trigger for it. Switching the viewport denoising backend from Optix to OpenImageDenoise makes viewport denoising work again. Switching again to Optix makes it not work anymore. Restarting Blendermakes denoising work again, until the problem returns.

Hi, is that with CUDA or OptiX render? We're tracking similar bug at #114468

It occurs with OptiX.
To me, it does not happen with multiple frames, but simply with viewport navigation of a scene, without any frame switch.

Thanks. Can confirm with both CUDA and OptiX. Like other denoiser bugs, I suspect culprit is same here: newer NVIDIA drivers

This should be fixed by updating NVIDIA drivers to 546.33 or above. See comment: #114548 (comment)
