System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19045-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Super/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.6.0 NVIDIA 516.93

Blender Version
Broken: version: 4.1.0 Alpha, branch: main, commit date: 2023-11-09 02:07, hash: 368b38be3720
Worked: don't know

Short description of error

  1. In the Outliner, if you right click on a data block and select "Remap Users", a huge menu opens, where you can remap to other data blocks. Problems:
  • The pop-up menu has no scroll bars. In a larger file, it simply doesn't fit on the screen and therefore not useable
  • Clicking in the bottom half of the screen opens the menu upwards. Then, it is not sorted alphabetically, but sort of weirdly reversed.
  1. Selecting several data blocks and remapping them to one data block is very tedious:
  • It remaps the data blocks one-by-one, giving a pop up for each. But: it doesn't remember the last selection, but the one before the last. The minimum would be to at least remeber the last one, so the user could just click through. Even better would be to remap the multiple selected data blocks at once.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Open Outliner in a large blend file.
  • Right click on a data block, this can be an object, a material, etc.
  • Remap Users. (Sometimes inside the menu "ID Data")
  • Open pop-up menu under "New ID"
  • The menu doesn't fit, doesn't have scroll capability. Also no search.

Step 2:

  • Select multiple ovjects/materials/whatever.
  • Click Remap Users.
  • Try to remap them to the same object. It only does it one-by-one and the "New ID" only remembers the second to last selection.

Try to remap them to the same object. It only does it one-by-one and the "New ID" only remembers the second to last selection.

Hi, thanks for the report. This is being discussed here: #93814

Open pop-up menu under "New ID"
The menu doesn't fit, doesn't have scroll capability. Also no search.

The issue reported here is a request for modified/improved behavior and not a bug in current behavior. Closing as this bug tracker is only for bugs and errors.

Okay thanks first of all for the quick reply.

Scrool bars or search funcionality = improvement, okay understood.

I will rephare the report: The menu doesn't fit on the screen. The user CANNOT select part of the entries in the list. I just added a picture, the right part of the list is off screen and not selectable. --> this is most certainly a bug.
= I can't select Materials starting with a letter higher than "M".

Something like this we could do: 83ce3ef0db

This has been fixed recently, see 83ce3ef0db

Was thinking about this report, too:

  • @Harley : enabling search in large enums might be possible, not sure if this really makes sense though?
  • I assume we could change the behavior of the operator by not using enums, but doing a proper search button as done e.g. in this commit : 8be86d3254 (that would loose the ability to have a dialog though...)

I was mentioning 8be86d3254 since pointer properties are not supported for operators afaict

Yeah, I seeing complaints about this for years... https://devtalk.blender.org/t/remap-materials-in-outliner/13814/6

This operator popup doesn't seem quite fit for this purpose.

The pop-up menu has no scroll bars

No. You can scroll it up and down with the little arrows at top and bottom, but that won't help you because the big problem you are experiencing is that half your choices are hidden and cut off at the right side.

@PratikPB2123 @lichtwerk

In this comment Campbell implies this could be an easy fix if it used "an ID search drop-down". Does this ring a bell?

He later suggests "to solve this in a generic way, where any enum can be flagged as searchable, so we don't need to keep making custom UI's for each case" but I'm okay with a custom UI for this if need be. Just not sure what he means by "an ID search drop-down". Can you think of an example to point me to?

Maybe he meant material/viewlayer/scene dropdowns?: image
But Philipp explained in chat, template_ID does not well with operators

I think ID search drop-down dont work in operator dialogs.
For that you would have to either be able to define Pointer properties for operators or the stuff prop_search does would have to be made usable somehow for WM_operator_props_dialog_popup. You can make it work for the Adjust last operation panel (that is why I mentioned 8be86d3254), but I think for the Outliner, we better have a dialog.

Same thing I meant with

  • @Harley : enabling search in large enums might be possible, not sure if this really makes sense though?

Regarding the issue of "not remembering" Another way to solve this would be a single operator acting on the whole selection in the Outliner, but do we even have something in context that would enable us to iterate over everything selected in the Outliner?
