Blender freezes randomly on arch linux #121094

System Information
Operating system: Arch Linux
Graphics card: Intel Corporation UHD Graphics 620

Blender Version
Broken: 4.1.0
Worked: 2.79

So, simply, blender just randomly freezes, i don't know what causes it, and i have tried different methods to fix it, but it just randomly crashes, i tried in a new user, but it still crashes.

It happened to me a bunch of times, but a few of the times it happened i was: A, Adding an object. B, Animating an object. C, Saving the preferences

Whenever it freezes it doesn't log anything in the console, It just stops, and can only be closed by force closing it with the kill command.

I tried to fix it on my own, but couldn't detect the problem at all to fix it.

Likely a GPU hang... #80458 #112440 #107642

Could you try a different version of mesa driver for your iGPU? Could you give us the system info (Help > Save System Info) file so we can determine if it's a problematic driver version?

Also any methods on here works see section 6.16?

Hi sorry for the delay, i am unsure if it's a GPU hang, but it most likely is.

I tried to switch into nixos, incase arch is the problem, and still does that.

Here's the system-info.txt.

@ChengduLittleA I tried a lot of potential solutions and i will list them all.

Exact Problem

The issue is in all linux distros, maybe something with the mesa drivers, and it's most definitely a GPU hang, i verified by doing the instructions for logging errors in intel GPUs from this comment. Then i read all the threads and while probably the same issue, i want to clear what my exact issue really is.

Blender opens fine at first, even this file opens and doesn't hang even when rendering, then a while later it randomly freezes, i have noticed it freezing while: moving objects, adding objects, selecting objects, setting materials and when i unfocus and focus on the window again.

Before it freezes, it freezes the whole system and CPU usage hits 100%, when everything is back the CPU process normalizes and blender no longer responds, the only way to even close is to kill [pid] or killall blender.

It doesn't always freeze at the same time, and can be left open for a long time without any hang, unless i do something it doesn't freeze.

I tried blender 2.80, 2.93, 3.6(from daily builds), 4.1. none seemed to fix my issue, so i tried the solutions below

Potential Solutions

Try in a different display server

Although suggested a lot, and most likely not to work, but tried it in: i3wm, sway, hyprland, gnome and gnome xorg, since the problem is from the hardware it's not guaranteed to fix it, but a lot of people suggested it as a potential solution, thinking it was an issue from my window managers, i also tried opening blender in xserver without any window managers, the issue still persisted.

Changing the module options for i915

I got one suggestion telling me to try tweaking the kernel module options for i915, while i didn't try much in there, i tried to do exactly what he told me, and here are the options i set:

intel_iommu=igfx_off i915.modeset=1 i915.enable_dc=0 i915.enable_fbc=1 i915.enable_psr=1 i915.enable_dp_mst=0 i915.disable_power_well=0

You could put this in your boot options('E' in the grub menu), and try, you could also try modinfo i915 to see other options.

This options seemed to have worked at first but it didn't, while might not have worked for me, it might work for someone else.

Also i was told that this made blender work in the past and on an older machine from 2010

Trying other distos in vm/container

Yes, ofcourse that also has a low chance of working, but i tried, i have switched to nixos for this specific issue in hopes it was a problem in the arch kernel, and also tried in fedora and arch again with distrobox, but again couldn't really work for some reason.

Writing to the device to extend hang time

I tried what was suggested in this comment but that didn't work either.

Software rendering

After trying every single thing i thought of, and even doing a memtest to see if it's my memory that's the issue(a suggestion from irc), i finally decided to see if it would still hang if i tried software rendering using the CPU instead, and that's exactly what i did.

To do this, you must first declare LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 before you open blender, i suggest you put that in ur blender.desktop or just launch blender with LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 blender in terminal.

This doesn't exactly "fix" the issue, but avoids it by not using the iGPU at all, and keep in mind that you'll pretty much get a very low performance as well, unless your CPU is really good you'll struggle with this.

Also, the blender-softwaregl behaved the same without LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1, it freezes as well. so the only workaround i found is software rendering.

Remember not to define LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 globally as any other app that works fine on your GPU will now also avoid using it, so i don't recommend declaring it globally or even exporting it.

Also, i am quite unsure if this works 100%, but i have rendered 3 files, exported 3 files, and opened 4 files and even did some shading without it freezing.

Anyways, i hope this helps for any other person facing this problem, and hope one of these will work for u.
