This is fixed in Eevee next, in 4.2 Eevee acts the same as Cycles.

Crashing while viewing animation in Cycles

Eevee Next - poor performance on macOS

The last few weeks performance seems to have been improved a lot. In the worst cases, eevee next is still about 1/3 slower in FPS, but in some scenes it is actually faster now than eevee.
