Blender crashes when removing NVidia Card #107119

Closed
opened 2023-04-19 11:04:24 +02:00 by Peter Vine · 7 comments

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19045-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: Intel(R) Iris(R) Plus Graphics 640 Intel 4.5.0 - Build 31.0.101.2112

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.5.0, branch: blender-v3.5-release, commit date: 2023-03-29 02:56, hash: 1be25cfff18b
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
Using an eGPU with Optix, not sure about CUDA, when GPU is disconnected and windows is also restarted opening blender will not immediately crash, however if cycles is enabled and switching to rendered view, it will crash, this occurs even when the rendering device is CPU. when opening preferences to disable gpu, it crashes blender.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
having had a NVidia GPU connected to computer, restart computer without GPU connected, open blender, go to render settings and set it to cycles, and press rendered view. this should cause a crash, reopening blender and going to preferences will also crash blender

As a workaround, you should be able to start Blender with factory settings, then the GPU should be disabled in the preferences again.

@peterdagrape hi, have you tried this workaround?
If that doesn't help, try clean installation of GPU drivers, that may fix the crash (#108101)

The issue is definitely blender, I haven’t been able to try it but because it will work flawlessly with a GPU connected, I believe it to be a blender problem, my guess is that blender will write something to a config file somewhere and when a file that has been saved with GPU enabled is loaded without the GPU it will load but as soon as you try to view the settings it seems to check for some GPU specific thing like CUDA, and when it isn’t found it will just crash, I believe I reinstalled blender a while back and the issue got fixed. Likely to be a CUDA thing though, I used to have an AMD card and I don’t remember this issue.

They are saved in userpref.blend
I'm not sure whether you've tried above workarounds yet. (Clean installation of GPU drivers has fixed the problem for other users)
