Various crashes after changing NVIDIA card to AMD #107991

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19045-SP0 64 Bits (22H2)
Graphics card: AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT ATI Technologies Inc. 4.5.0 Core Profile Context 22.20.27.09.230330

Blender Version
Broken:

  • version: 3.5.1, branch: blender-v3.5-release, commit date: 2023-04-24 18:11, hash: e1ccd9d4a1d3,
  • blender-3.6.0-alpha+main.6daa3f6b8a9b-windows.amd64-release

Short description of error

  • 1# After upgrading from an NVIDIA graphics card (GTX 1070) to AMD, in Blender Preferences, in the System tab, Under "Cycles Render Devices", pressing CUDA or OptiX would crash the program, I can understand not being able to use them due to having AMD Graphics card, but It would help to have a different behavior instead of crashing, I tried removing startup.blend and userpref.blend from the config folder but it still crashes (I originally had a preference to run OptiX in my old build, and with the AMD Graphics card, blender would instantly crash without an option to change it, so I had to reset my userprefs.blend).

  • 2# Any time I try to open the denoise sub-menu in the render properties on cycles, the program crashes.

  • 3# Trying to "Save System Info" also crashes (and creates an empty "system-info.txt" file), which has the unfortunate side effect of crashing the "cmd_debug" variations, since running them also creates an empty "system-info.txt" file and crashes (Attached is the output of "blender_debug_gpu.cmd").

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
1# :

  1. Have a computer with NVIDIA Graphics card installed
  2. Run blender-launcher.exe
  3. In Edit > Preferences > System > Cycles Render Devices > Select "OptiX"
  4. Click the "Three Lines" square icon in the bottom left, and click "Save preferences"
  5. Close Blender and shut down the computer
  6. Replace the Graphics card with an AMD Brand graphics card
  7. Power On the Computer
  8. Remove the NVIDIA Drivers and Install the AMD Drivers
  9. Open Blender

2# :

  1. Open Blender
  2. Open the Render Properties > Switch Render Engine to "Cycles"
  3. Under Sampling > Viewport / Render > Open the Denoise sub-menu (Even if Denoise is Enabled / Disabled, it still crashes.

3# :

  1. Open Blender
  2. Click Help > Save System Info
  3. Save the file in "Desktop"

Alternatively, the error might be reproduced if after step 4 (In issue 1#) you transfer the startup.blend and userpref.blend from the computer with a NVIDIA Graphics card to a computer with an AMD Graphics card.

Hi @Yalan , could you give us the crash log (if there is any) for the three types of crashes? It helps to
identify where the crash happens and help us to know how to handle hardware changes. It's a relatively rare situation where hardware swapping could happen so the code may assume the hardware is present.

What did you mean by so I had to reset my userprefs.blend if it's crashing instantly? Which one of these directories did you touch?

Thanks!

I repeated the crashes, yet I did not find the crash log in the directory:
C:\Users\USER\AppData\Local\Temp

As mentioned, the CMD debug versions crash quickly and print out "blender_debug_output.txt" and "blender_system_info.txt" (which the "blender_system_info.txt" output file is always empty), I'm attaching the blender debug outputs from the CMD version, and one empty system_info file (from blender_debug_gpu.cmd output).

What did you mean by so I had to reset my userprefs.blend if it's crashing instantly? Which one of these directories did you touch?

I used this directory (USER / SYSTEM):
C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\Blender Foundation\Blender\3.5\config
and by reset, I meant renaming the userprefs.blend file, opening Blender (which now worked since the settings returned to their default options), saving preferences, and later deleting the renamed file (startup.blend remained the same, as temporarily renaming the startup.blend file and letting blender create a new default file did not affect the situation of the crashes).

Regarding testing the Blender Verison 3.6.0-alpha, I clicked outside the splash screen without saving settings and managed to experience the same crashes as 3.5.1

1# has been reported already at: #107119

Guess 2# is also due to the same reason as 1# because NVIDIA/Optix preference is present in denoise pop-menu.

You could try the workaround Thomas mentioned in #107119 to avoid the crash. Let us know whether it prevents all 3 crash situations.

For 3#, could you try clean installation of GPU drivers? this solution worked in #108101

I repeated the steps mentioned in that issue and removed the NVIDIA drivers using DDU, and now all of the issues I mentioned above have disappeared, and I can now change "Cycles Render Devices", open the denoise menu, and save system-info.txt file without crashes, Thanks!
