AMD Radeon RX 6650 XT Crash on Cycles rendering. #107276

AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core Processor 3.6 GHz
32.0 GB Installed RAM
Gigabyte Aorus B550 Pro V2 (This'll be important later.)
Operating system: Windows 10 version 22H2
Graphics card: AMD Radeon RX 6650 XT 8GB

Blender 3.5.0
Broken: 3.5.0, (code and rest of information on splash screen not sighted)
Worked: 3.5.0 (Used to work flawlessly, elaborating later on)

When trying to use Cycles rendering either in viewport or rendering in general, it crashes. No crash report in the designated folder whatsoever, just straight up closes, like you close the window.

Backstory is: I've used 2 different GPU's before this (RX 6650 XT, and RTX 2060. Used the 2060 as my render card and 6650 as miscellaneous / gaming) weird stuff started happening. My storage was almost running out so I've bought a new M.2 drive to install heavy files such as Steam games and software's. I want to open Blender, crashes immediately. My motherboard has three GPU slots, x16, x8 and x4. Turns out when I occupy the second M.2 slot it disables the 2nd and 3rd GPU slot making my 2060, slotted in the x8 slot, not work anymore. I took the GPU out to check upon any issues, but after rigorous checking (Including taking the thing apart to check the connectors / board for any issues) none. Checked my 6650 XT the same way, nothing visually wrong. So I putt the 6650 back, and Blender does open, but as soon as I open the System tab in Preferences, it crashes, that was because it was on OptiX instead of HIP, so I putt back the 2060, swap to HIP and it did flawless me, to my confusion since with the other way around with the other card in it, it straight up crashed. So I went to check if the 2060 still renders normally, shockingly did. It used Cycles with no problem whatsoever. So I set the settings back to HIP, close Blender, swap the cards again, open up Blender, try to go into rendered view with multiple types of files, even the default settings, crashes on Cycles rendered view. Deleted Blender, reinstalled it, didn't work.

Recration: Open Blender, set all the settings correctly for GPU usage, go into viewport, set engine to Cycles, on GPU based rendering, try rendered view. Crash.
Additional file: Happens on every file, even when Blender had been completely PC wiped with no traces left.

Hi, thanks for the report. I suspect this is related to: #107119 (crash because selected render device is not found)
Can you confirm?
Could you share crash logs?: https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/dev/troubleshooting/crash.html#windows

Hi, as stated in the post, there's no traces whatsoever from the crash, no txt file, no error message. The render settings selected are correct. Making this problem really complicated is that im missing vital files and information I cannot find.

Hi, thanks for the update. Without enough information it'd difficult for us to help and investigate the problem.
What does event viewer capture after the crash?

Hi, I am as confused as you guys are. I'm desperately trying to find any crash logs, but nothing is found unfortunately

Did you check event-viewer report?

I have not, where do I find it? Also is this the right path to the crash log file? C:\Users\Admin\AppData\Local\Temp

  • search for event-viewer (from task bar)
  • after blender-crash it will show Windows Error Reporting or Application Error
  • Click on it to see details about crash.

Also is this the right path to the crash log file? C:\Users\Admin\AppData\Local\Temp

Yes, you will find crash.txt there.

Instead I'd suggest you to run blender_debug_log.cmd or blender_debug_gpu.cmd batch files. After crash it will generate blender_debug_log.txt file. Upload that file here. This file also contains path to crash.txt file at the bottom.

Well no, there hasn't been anybody contacting me or here or even Reddit to give any insight, my system doesn't create any sufficient error messages so I guess I gotta live now with not using Cycles on this gpu :/

Hi, I suspect crash is due to leftover NVIDIA drivers.
When you put AMD graphics card, make sure to remove all NVIDIA drivers: #107991 (comment)
Similar crash has been reported recently, clean installation of drivers has solved the problem, see: #108101, #107991, #108810

Does it work for you as well?

I assume you're experiencing crash due to same reason, closing.

Also, No activity for more than a week. As per the tracker policy we assume the issue is gone and can be closed.

Thanks again for the report. If the problem persists please open a new report with the required information.
