System Information
Operating system: Linux-5.15.0-87-generic-x86_64-with-glibc2.35 64 Bits, X11 UI
Graphics card: Mesa Intel(R) HD Graphics 520 (SKL GT2) Intel 4.6 (Core Profile) Mesa 23.0.4-0ubuntu1~22.04.1

Blender Version
Broken: version: 4.1.0 Alpha, branch: main, commit date: 2023-10-20 15:23, hash: b0e7a6db56ca
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Hello, I'm new as contributor. I hope this is the right process to report a bug !

Short description of error
When using the eyedropper of the grease pencil in 2D animation, the right color is selected but darker.

image

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. In layout / Object mode. I created a grease pencil object (the stroke).

  2. In 2D animation / Draw mode (Or Vertex Draw), I painted the stroke in green.

  3. I used the eyedropper to get the color (green in my case) and applied it on the stroke. I'm in Material preview. I did it by holding E as describe in issue #111736. I repeated the process 4 times to exaggerate the problem..
The result is a different shade of green instead of having the same color as the one selected (when I did the eyedropper, I only click once on the color and did not move the mouse to get a color mix).

I think it has something to do with the light. Like you don't get the actual color but the perceived one that will depend on how much light the object gets.

Problems with the color Picker on Grease Pencil have been reported before. See:
#82992: Grease pencil eyedropper doesn't sample correct vertex color.
#103502: Exchanging a color in Grease pencil from a color attribute is bugged

But none seem to involve Vertex Paint specifically. Therefore I am confirming it as a different issue.
Thanks for the report.

That s true, it is picking the color from the pixels you actually have on screen.

In Texture paint for example we used to have an option called Sample Merged which you can turn OFF (not very easily unfortunately, see #101144) which results in the values taken from the actual texture (not from the pixels).

It would be good to once implement this, right now you have to be in Solid viewport drawing to pick the right colors.
(see also https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpU029WvRBw for further info)

This has been reported before btw., see #82992 will close as a duplicate.

It is the same underlying problem though
